Where to begin?

Good little girls dream of wedding days.  Pink-tinted, candy-cloud dreams filled with white dresses, prince charmings, first dances and perfect kisses.

Me?

I dreamed of houses.

Bright white, square box dreams filled with clean lines, warm lights, rich paints, and smooth wood.

Even before I had ever heard of Frank Lloyd Wright or Charles and Ray Eames, when I would have thought Atomic Ranch was a new flavor of Hidden Valley, I knew what I loved.  I couldn’t call it by name, but I saw it in my dreams.

And I never gave a damn about prince charming, until one night, on a semi-blind date, Matt looked at me across a plate of sushi  and said the three little words that hooked me like a hungry fish:

Mid-century modern.”

Come again?

I love the whole mid-century modern style thing.  There’s something about the clean lines of that era that are just really appealing.  The way things should be.  You know what I mean?”

Ten months later we got married.

Ten months after that we bought our own mid-century modern house.

And two months after that, we started this blog.

We live in a city where horses and humans are perfectly bred, where hot browns and bourbon are showcased on every menu, where we all bleed UK blue and where tradition – and traditional – reign supreme.

Somewhere along the way, we didn’t get the memo.  Take one look at our atomic anomaly of a house, perched proudly and obliviously among stately colonials and family-friendly split-levels, and you’ll understand.

But there have to be others like us out there.  People who appreciate horses and bourbon, who love the home team (Go Cats!), but who have… other interests.  Who read Dwell like a religious text and swoon over Bertoia coconut chairs.  Who feel a little sick when they watch the masses of suburbia marching forward in identical Ball Home uniforms, garages sticking out like shields to protect them from… what?  Personality?  Oh, the horror.

Ok, I’m getting a little hoity-toity.  We’re not design snobs.  We just have a passion, and we’d like to see if other folks in our great city, our beloved state, feel the same way.

Bluegrass Modern is our chance to spout off about the things we love – design, architecture, food, people, art –  mid-century design ideas that transcend time, modern design ideas that get it right.  At least in our eyes.

So let’s explore what modern means in the Bluegrass State.  If you’re even a little curious, saddle up and come along for the ride.
